Sustainable Software With Tom Kennes | Software Delivery Club

Last week I spoke with Tom Kennes, sustainable cloud consultant and ambassador for the Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA). We discussed how IT and software delivery can be more sustainable and the energy used when Ronaldo posts on Instagram.

We also talked about the impact of programming language choice on carbon footprint, the carbon impact of watching Netflix and how to right-size your cloud infrastructure.

Lots to dive into for the techies, with tools that are available to measure the impact of the software you build and deliver. There are some great practical tips for individuals and organisations alike.

You can listen to the whole episode on your favourite podcast platform or directly on the web here.

Product vs Service

A SaaS provides a service to a user via the internet, and people pay money to use it.

A SaaS, however, is not seen as a service to the software company that builds it. It’s known internally as a product — or many products.

And ironically, that product might itself be built out of microservices.

Products and services are fundamentally (in real-world terms) two completely different things, yet in the crazy world of software, they refer to the exactly same thing from different perspectives.

So which is it, product or service?
